Sleeping Dogs Movie in Development with Donnie Yen

Being a Hong Konger, I had a lot more fun than usual with Square Enix’s GTA-in-China title, Sleeping Dogs. Now the news is that the Ip Man himself, Donnie Yen, wants to move the franchise to the big screen. The game is basically just about a cop who tries to infiltrate a Triad organization, so I feel like it wouldn’t be too difficult to screw up and would merely be a retread of past crime films at worst. But video game films are basically cursed, so maybe I should save my excitement for the sequel that is supposedly never coming out.

Yen, who recently co-starred in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and xXx: Return of Xander Cage, follows an undercover police officer (Yen) on a mission to take down one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world: the notorious Triads. The movie based on an action video game is set in Hong Kong and focuses on martial arts fighting, racing, boat chasesآ…and shooting while doing all of that. Yen, a Chinese martial artist, has long been a fight choreographer and is probably best known to audiences as the star آ— and Wing Chun grandmaster آ— of the Ip Man franchise.
