Google Fiber Ending Free-Internet Offer In Its First City

New Fiber subscribers in Kansas City will now have monthly payments, but the upside is that there’s a speed increase.

It could signal that Fiber آ— the most expensive unit for parent Alphabet, besides Google آ— is facing more pressure to turn into a viable, competitive broadband and cable business. That means reaping real margins. And the new pricing model آ— no more wiring up houses essentially for free آ— could help Fiber get to better margins. The pricing change could also be a way to get more subscribers onboard.
