Hundreds of Cities Are Wired With Fiber That Goes Unused

Tired of being on a slow broadband connection in your city and wish you could tap into a fiber connection? The answer to your prayers might just be closer than you think, but due to behind the scenes agreements, those fiber lines go unused.

Because ISPs often double as cable and telephone companies, during contract negotiations with governments, they'll often offer incentives to the governmentآ—such as better or faster service, earlier access to (their company's) cable internet for residents, and the likeآ—in exchange for a non-compete clause.
