Iceland Unveils Crowd Sourced Constitution

In what is a first among nations, Iceland will have a constitution that is written entirely by its own citizens on the internet. The proposed draft of the constitution was put up on its own website and suggestions for additions and deletions were made via Facebook, Twitter and other websites until it was decided upon and presented to Iceland’s Parliament.

Iceland’s original constitution was created in 1944 when the country gained independence from Denmark. The country’s economic collapse in 2008 prompted calls for a rewrite with checks and balances to prevent a repeat of the financial crisis.
