Seasonic FOCUS SGX-650 650W SFX-L PSU Review

Seasonic is FOCUSing more on small footprint high output power supplies, and the new FOCUS SGX series is targeting the small form factor market once again. This beefy 650 watt unit is fully modular, packs a 10 year warranty, is diminutive in size, had good efficiency, and comes complete with an ATX adapter plate as well.

In the power supply realm, when consumers think of quiet and efficient power supplies one of the first companies that comes to mind is Seasonic. Today, we are having a look at the second SFX-L model in Seasonics FOCUS lineup the 650W FOCUS SGX called the SGX-650 (SSR-650SGX).

Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 40 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and its reputation for quality, has lead to an explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, XFX, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

Putting 650W of Power Supply in a 450W Housing

Today, we are looking at our 2nd SFX-L unit from Seasonic's FOCUS line of power supplies. Prior to this unit and the previous FOCUS SGX-450, we have evaluated a lot of units in the FOCUS PLUS lineup and all of those units were excellent products. However, until we saw the FOCUS SGX-450 all of them were ATX12v/EPS units and not the much smaller SFX-L form factor unit that the FOCUS SGX units represent. That made us a bit wary last time around as life is full of trade offs and that applies to power supplies too. However, the FOCUS SGX-450 ended up being an outstanding unit even with the handicaps that come with this form factor. So, the FOCUS SGX-650 is, seemingly, on solid ground then today except for one small issue. This unit is 200W larger in capacity and we have not gained any more space to work with. This means we will be very interested in seeing how this unit handles this extra burden without any extra help. First though, let's look at what Seasonic has to say about the unit:

The long-awaited new line of Seasonic's FOCUS SGX is versatile in its application, and powerful with a small footprint. The FOCUS SGX is shipped with an SFX to ATX adapter bracket in the box, which allows the power supply to be mounted not only in the SFX form factor chassis, but also a standard ATX chassis should the user prefers to reserve more space for airflow inside the PC case. The Seasonic hybrid fan control is always enabled to optimize the cooling according to necessity.

Let’s move on now and see what we can expect when a user purchases the FOCUS SGX-650 power supplies in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
