Seasonic FOCUS PLUS Platinum 850W PSU Review

850 watt computer power supplies from Seasonic are nothing new to us, but Seasonic is taking a bit of a different direction with this Focus line of PSUs. The Focus Plus Platinum has been designed with a small footprint in mind, specifically built for those looking to build high powered small form factor computers like HTPCs.

Overview

The first thing we are going to look at with the FOCUS PLUS Platinum 850W is its packaging, accessories, and documentation. While normally none of these items is a make or break item for a power supply the packaging quite often contains a lot of information about the product we are purchasing. The inclusion of an owner’s manual that provides actual information about our product is also of great help. Accessories are almost unnecessary with a power supply as the unit is self contained, unless it is modular, but there are cases where a manufacturer can include useful accessories to make installation, routing, and use more efficient.

The packaging of the FOCUS PLUS Platinum 850W looks just like what we have seen from all of the previous FOCUS PLUS units we have reviewed. In fact, save for its slight color difference, it is essentially the same as the packaging we saw with the FOCUS PLUS Gold 850W. Once more then, the packaging is bold and striking with its presentation. The front of the packaging features a large black triangle and then a burst of platinum that fades across the packaging in multiple directions and, of note on the front of the packaging, we see an 80 Plus seal. A quick check of the 80 Plus website shows that this unit is indeed certified for 80 Plus Platinum levels of efficiency (how it actually performs is something we will see shortly). When we flip to the rear of the packaging, we find a bunch of advertising about today's unit including voltage regulation, efficiency, topology, fan design, etc. We also find the warranty listed here and it looks the FOCUS PLUS Platinum 850W is covered by a 10 year warranty as was the case with the most recent FOCUS PLUS units we have seen. This is a particularly long warranty given that these FOCUS PLUS units are not flagship products. Moving on to the sides of the packaging, we find the power label (reproduced below), the connector count (reproduced below), and finally a picture of the unit.

The FOCUS PLUS Platinum 850W is advertised as being a single 12v rail power supply similar to what we saw from the FOCUS PLUS Gold 850W. Today's FOCUS PLUS Platinum 850W's 12v rail has a capacity of up to 70A (or ~99% of the unit's capacity) if necessary. The minor rails (5v and 3.3v) each have a capacity of 20A and the combined capacity of those two rails is 100W. Combined with these outputs, we find that this unit has 6 PCIe connectors, 10 SATA connectors, and 5 Molex connectors. From a connectivity standpoint, this unit is more than on par with what we would expect from mid-range power supply as these values are identical to what we saw from the various PRIME 850W units and the previous FOCUS PLUS Gold 850W.

Once we open the FOCUS PLUS Platinum 850W packaging, we are left looking at the power supply itself, a power cord, some screws, the modular cables in a pouch, some zip-ties, some Velcro straps, and the user manual. The user manual is 12 pages long in 12 languages much like what we saw with the FOCUS PLUS Gold 850W. Once more, all we find in this are the installation instructions and a tiny troubleshooting section. That is just not good documentation but that is the way things have been with these units to date. Let's move on to look at the unit itself now in the hopes that things there are better than here.
