AMD Precision Boost 2 and Wraith Prism Deep Dive

When AMD presented it new Precision Boost 2 technology, I have to think AMD undersold the feature in terms of what it was actually able to accomplish. The original Precision Boost on the 1st gen Ryzen processors was anemic at best. After seeing what Precision Boost 2 can accomplish, do we even need to try to overclock our new 2700X? Blasphemy!

AMD Precision Boost 2 - A Deeper Dive

Let's setup this article by putting two questions into play. Is AMD "overclocking" the 2700X better than we can overclock it? And, how big of an impact does your CPU cooling have on Precision Boost 2 and how well it works?

This is what we had to say about Precision Boost 2 in our 2700X review:

As we talked about on page one, the Precision Boost 2 system is a totally different animal than what we saw with the previous iteration. It is now a truly dynamic system that reacts to the CPUs temperature and load scenario. We are also using a very healthy XSPC custom cooling loop, so outside of using active cooling, we are likely showing the 2700X's Precision Boost 2 system in a way that is about as good as it gets. Even so, Precision Boost 2 is fairly amazing. Going through all the testing in the last few days, I actually asked myself, should I even consider overclocking this CPU if it was my daily driver? Unless you are crunching core and thread intensive workloads all day long, I would have to say no. I feel dirty saying that, but I feel as though it is true.

We were never fans of the original Precision Boost, and if you look at the slide above you can see why. We could easily clock our 1st generation Ryzen CPUs to run at, or very near, the top clock rate of 4GHz, but of course across all cores instead of just one or two cores. This of course gave us much better performance than if we relied on Precision Boost for our overclocking.

Precision Boost 2 sits on top of an algorithm called XFR2, or eXtended Frequency Range 2. AMD has done a very good video on this and PB2 that explains it in the simplest form that any enthusiast or gamer should be able to understand.

What we have saw with Precision Boost 2 enabled in our 2700X review of course bore out that Precision Boost 2 was working very well for us. Given all of this, we wanted to take a closer look at just how well Precision Boost 2 was working for us, and what it did with a lesser cooling solution as well.

And take a closer look at Precision Boost 2 is exactly what we have done. We have spent the last week digging into Precision Boost 2, XFR2, and cooling. And the results have impressed us. Literally hundreds and hundreds of benchmarks later have given us a solid idea of what is best for the Ryzen CPU owner and gamer.
