FSP Hydro PTM 750W Power Supply Review

While FSP is still not a widely known brand name when it comes to enthusiast computer power supplies, it has actually been becoming fairly consistent in designing, manufacturing, and selling PSUs in North America that have not only held their own, but also been impressive products. How does this new member of its Hydro series hold up?

Conclusions

The FSP Hydro PTM 750W is the first member of Hydro PTM series that we have seen. It is not, however, the first Hydro unit we have seen as there have been a number of Hydro G and Hydro X units that have come before this unit in our testing. While lower end than this product, those have all been good units in the end with varying placement in FSP's lineup. Today, the Hydro PTM seems to occupy a bit higher place in FSP's lineup than those previous units. So we would expect this unit to not only match those previous units performance, but also to build upon them in our testing. Is that the case today? Or does this thing end up a bit middling like a PT Cruiser? Let's see!


HardOCP’s testing methodology is intended to very much push power supplies to their advertised wattage rating in temperatures that will represent some of the hottest computer enthusiast cases. So if a unit passes all our testing it is definitely not something to take lightly. In fact we expect more power supplies to fail our testing than make it through unscathed.

Build Quality

The FSP Hydro PTM 750W starts things off today on a rather good note, much like was the case with the previous Hydro G units we have reviewed. The exterior of the unit is very much like those previous Hydro G units with only a few minor changes to the overall branding and aesthetic. One of those changes, however, was not the interchangeable stickers that don't seem to add anything to the look the of the unit that is good and just seem odd. Otherwise, we also get FlexForce style cabling to go with this unit and that is always a nice touch. Moving to the interior, we find a very modern topology but a slightly different design and layout from what we got with those previous Hydro G units. When we look to the component selection we see that things look very nice overall. The reason for that slight caveat is that we have Teapo capacitors along with Nippon Chemi-con and Rubycon capacitors (which are much higher quality in general). We also get a FDB fan paired with this unit which should make most of our quiet cooling enthusiasts at least somewhat happy. Lastly, the actual integration on the Hydro PTM 750W was generally good but it could definitely still be cleaned up a bit. When we turn our attention to the support for this unit, we see some very high highs and some very low lows. The very high highs involve the 10 year warranty. The very low lows involve the documentation that is, once more, very close to worthless.

Load Testing

In our regular load tests today, we see a unit that is very competitive with the FSP Hydro PTM 750W. When we look at the voltage regulation, the 12v rail showed a peak change of 0.1v while the 5v and 3.3v rails showed peak changes of 0.08v and 0.07v respectively. These values are generally excellent by absolute numbers and they are very good by relative values as well. When we look at comparable units, we see that the Hydro PTM 750W was better than In Win C 750W and SilverStone ST75F-GS V2 while being mixed compared to the Seasonic FOCUS PLUS Gold and Platinum 750W, Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 750W, and Enermax Revolution X't II 750W. Interestingly, this unit also trailed the FSP Hydro G 750W that we reviewed a bit ago. When we moved on to look at the efficiency, we saw the unit's efficiency doing very well as we had a range from 89.16% to 92.56% efficient at 120v and 87.19% to 91.65% at 100v. When we look at the 80 Plus results, we see that using 80 Plus’ loads, and conditions the Hydro PTM 750W was 89.62%-92.54%-88.94% efficient. These values are excellent but these do miss the 80 Plus Platinum category by a touch. Lastly for this section, the Hydro PTM 750W passed our Torture Test in fine shape.

Moving on to the Transient Load Tests, we see where this unit kicked it up a notch and started to show us why it was the new Hydro unit from FSP. During our Transient Load tests, the 12v rail had a peak change of ~320mV and the loaded 5v rail had a peak change of ~90mV while the unloaded 5v rail during the 12v load had a peak change of ~70mV. While those values may not look amazing, they are good in an absolute sense. Beyond that, these values are great in a relative sense as this unit was only trailing the Seasonic FOCUS PLUS Gold 750W and was mixed with the Seasonic FOCUS PLUS Platinum 750W. After that, it bested the FSP Hydro G 750W, Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 750W, SilverStone ST75F-GS V2, In Win C 750W, and Enermax Revolution X't II 750W. That makes this unit the second best among comparable units which is a very nice improvement over the middle of the pack relative performance above!

DC Output Quality

As we move on to look at the DC Output Quality of the FSP Hydro PTM 750W, we see that this unit is once more is flexing its muscles and not just doing well by absolute terms but it also is continuing to impress in relative terms. During testing, the Hydro PTM 750W saw all of the main DC output rails start off at ~20mV of ripple/noise or below. When the trace amplitudes increased during testing they did so by small margins as the peak value on the 12v rail was ~25mV and the peak value on the minor rails was still less than ~10mV of ripple/noise. By absolute numbers, those minor rail figures are hard to beat and the 12v rail is not bad either. By relative terms, this unit was better than the Enermax Revolution X't II 750W, In Win C 750W, and FSP Hydro G 750W. It was also mixed with the Seasonic FOCUS PLUS Gold, Seasonic FOCUS PLUS Platinum 750W, and Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 750W. Roughly then, this unit is tied as being the best among comparable products in this aspect of our testing today. Tied for first is great, in fact the only thing better is being cleanly first but who is going to complain?

Noise

The FSP Hydro PTM 750W is following up on a few other Hydro units that we have seen from FSP. Like those previous power supplies, this unit is advertised as being quiet for a variety of reasons. However, one of the interesting things we see today is a change in the fan used with this unit compared to those previous units. When it comes to fan choices nothing gets quiet cooling enthusiasts quite as riled up as this. So, switching up from a product that did well to a new one is not without its risks today. However, FSP need not worry as the fan employed today (coupled with the fan controller, design, and efficiency of this unit) left us with results that were very similar to what we saw from the previous 750W Hydro unit we reviewed. Indeed, the only time this unit was audible was during our full load tests and then I had to be directly inline with the units exhaust to detect it in our load testing environment. As such, the Hydro PTM 750W seems to be another rather solid option for users looking for a quiet power supply in normal scenarios while also giving you solid performance in the 750W range. As before with the Hydro G, there are probably some quieter units out there, but the Hydro PTM 750W is a good option today.

Paul's Thoughts:

With the FSP Hydro G 750W I remarked that I didn't love or hate the unit because it showed up and did its job like a quiet competent professional. Today, I am not sure that the Hydro PTM 750W is much different at first glance. It is a solid unit that does a great job without much in the way of flash. That said, it also does better overall than the Hydro G 750W did as this unit was one of the best 750W units we have seen in awhile in a number of aspects of our testing. Those improvements, coupled with the increased efficiency of the unit, make this unit a bit more exciting of a product than the Hydro G 750W was. On top of that, the FSP Hydro PTM 750W unit does do one of those things you expect from products that slot in higher than older products or supersedes a product......it does a better job just about across the board. That is not always a given as we have seen lots of examples where a new product is just a new product not a better product. Today though, the Hydro PTM 750W is not just a new product it is a better product slotting in a bit higher than the Hydro G 750W. So, FSP does everything right with this unit when it comes to performance metrics. Now, its downfall could be the pricing because that is one factor that users look to rather rapidly no matter how the unit performed.

The Bottom Line

The FSP Hydro PTM 750W is the latest power supply we have seen from FSP in the various Hydro series of units. When the rubber met the road, the Hydro PTM 750W showed itself to not only be the newest of the Hydro lines, but also the best overall. How did it do this? Well, it did this by giving us very very good voltage regulation, excellent Transient Load Test results, excellent efficiency, excellent DC Output Quality, very good to excellent build quality, and was generally quiet in our testing. Looking at that list, we see that this unit has checked just about every box we look at and checked those boxes well.

We also see that this unit is coming in today with strong, newly expanded, 10 year warranty support which is certain to tickle some people's fancy. Now, the one thing that always can trip up a stellar run like a shoelace tackle is the pricing. Today, the FSP Hydro PTM 750W is coming in at $114.99 plus shipping (at both Amazon and Newegg) which puts it right about where we are seeing units like the Seasonic FOCUS PLUS Platinum 750W. For a unit that traded blows with, and at times out-classed that unit, the pricing is not bad at all. In fact, that aggressive of pricing makes this unit one that should be considered if you are in the market for something in this general output and feature range. Ranking up there with the big dogs in performance and pricing is making this a very attractive unit from FSP.
