FSP Hydro PTM 750W Power Supply Review

While FSP is still not a widely known brand name when it comes to enthusiast computer power supplies, it has actually been becoming fairly consistent in designing, manufacturing, and selling PSUs in North America that have not only held their own, but also been impressive products. How does this new member of its Hydro series hold up?

FSP Group is one of the few actual power supply manufacturers and can be found providing OEM services for a number of other brands at various times including OCZ, Zalman, AOpen, Antec, SilverStone, Super Talent, Sigma, and many more. This wide distribution of power supplies by FSP is not surprising given that it has been in business since 1993 and is one of the top 10 producers of power supplies in the world. FSP has previously been regarded as a manufacturer of basic workhorse type power supplies that "just gets the job done". However, over the last couple of years FSP has put a good bit of effort into developing a number of high powered and higher end computer power supplies at the retail level. Today, we are seeing a new product representing a new product line from FSP, the Hydro PTM 750W (HPT750M).

Today, we are looking at another evolution of FSP's high end line of power supplies the Hydro series. While not currently billed as being the absolute top of the line or "flagship" product from FSP, the previous Hydro units we reviewed were very good products. In fact, a number of those units have been from Hydro lines that are bordering on the mainstream product segment yet still represented very solid performers and/or values that exceeded their product placement. So, today, with the new Hydro PTM 750W we would expect to see yet another very solid unit that is maybe a bit higher end than its product placement and, therefore, what we have seen from previous Hydro units. If that is the case, and the performance and/or pricing also matches, then this unit could well be a killer product. However, before moving on to see how this unit does in our tests, let’s see what FSP has to say about this power supply:

FSP's Hydro PTM power supply series are equipped with the highest grade components such as DC-DC module design and 100% Japanese capacitors. These power supplies offer 80 PLUS Platinum rated efficiency, voltage stability, and ripple suppression. With the support of high-quality 135mm FDB fan, the Hydro PTM series are extremely cool and quiet. The series come with changeable unique side stickers and a fully modular cable system, they are ideal for DIY enthusiasts, gamers, and overclockers.
