MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X TRIO Review

MSI has launched a new high end entry to its GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING series lineup. The MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X TRIO has a lot of performance with improved cooling compared to previous GAMING series video cards. We’ll see how well it performs in several games, and overclock it as high as we can.

MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X TRIO - GPU Clock

Keep these figures in mind, the base clock on the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X is 1544MHz, and the boost clock is 1657MHz at default gaming mode. Therefore, we will put the red-line at 1544MHz and the green line at 1657MHz, anything above that sustained is GPU Boost in action.

Take note that you may want to compare these results with the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X we have previously evaluated.

GPU Clock Speed

GPU clock speed consistency while gaming is very good on this video card. It is rare that we see a straight line of consistency like this on air-cooled video cards without raising the power limit. Yet, this video card with its improved cooling is able to provide just that. We experienced a solid 1911MHz while gaming for over 20 minutes without fluctuation. This is an excellent result.

This result is actually more consistent than the frequency was on the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X we have previously evaluated. Though that video card had a higher average, and maximum, it also had several instances where it dropped performance all the way down to 1886MHz. The GAMING X TRIO above provides a more consistent performance level.

Temperature

Temperature is another win for the GAMING X TRIO video card. At maximum it hit 68c by default, and averaged at 65c. This is yet again superior to the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING X we have previously evaluated. That video card rose up to 70c and averaged 67c. Therefore, the beefed up cooling on the GAMING X TRIO is definitely doing its job as there is improvement over the GAMING X.
