AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 4K Video Card Review

Does the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 play games well at 4K resolution? What game settings work best at 4K, and how does it compare to GeForce GTX 1080 and GeForce GTX 1080 Ti? Ten games are tested, new and old, DX11, DX12, and Vulkan at playable game settings and pushed to the max in this all out 4K brawl.

Forza Motorsport 7

Forza Motorsport 7 was released just recently on October 3rd to Microsoft Windows and XBOX One. This game, developed by Turn 10 Studios and published by Microsoft Studios, is a racing video game with many cars and circuit tracks. The game features dynamic weather patterns and you can set up your own weather patterns as well. Uniquely, this game natively supports DX12 in Windows 10. We will be using a custom setup race track with a heavy thunderstorm weather pattern with lots of rain and puddles to stress graphics. The game version at time of testing was 1.107.1807.2.

Due to this game running in DX12 under Windows 10 and lacking the exclusive full-screen option we have to use PresentMon to capture FPS data in-game. Mirillis Action! Will not work. Our evaluation is based off of real-world gameplay, playing the game, not the built-in benchmark.

A Note on Testing

Recently Forza Motorsport 7 has gained a lot of interest due to a recent review showing high performance on Vega versus the competition. Naturally we wanted to test this for ourselves as well. So today we are including this brand-new game into our suite.

One key thing to keep in mind between other reviews and our own is that we are using real-world gameplay playing the game and recording FPS with PresentMon. We are not using the built-in benchmark, and neither did Computer Base. We are not 100% sure how good the built-in benchmark actually is at representing real-world gameplay. We did note the built-in benchmark is very short, and our run-through is longer and uses a different camera view of the car. Just take the gameplay performance with the built-in benchmark with a grain a salt if you see it used in other reviews. When it comes to gaming nothing beats actually playing the game and recording real-world gameplay.

Highest Playable Settings

Finding the highest playable settings on the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 was very easy in this game because it plays very well in our experiences. Even at 4K we were able to crank this game up to its highest in-game quality settings on the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64. That makes this game very unique indeed. In addition to "Maxed Out" settings, we were also able to turn on the highest 8X MSAA level of AA image quality on AMD Radeon RX Vega 64. That is just unheard of, this game and this game only could do that.

Going over the in-game settings these are the in-game settings and their playable values on AMD Radeon RX Vega 64: Performance Target "Unlocked," Anisotropic Filtering "16X," Motion Blur Quality "Ultra," Shadow Quality "Ultra," Particles Resolution "Full," Procedural Quality "Ultra," Car Livery Quality "High," Mirror Quality "Ultra," Car Model Quality "High," Particle Effects Quality "High," Wet Reflection Quality "Ultra," MSAA Quality "8X," Lens Flare Quality "High," Windshield Reflection Quality "Ultra," Track Texture Quality "High," Reflection Quality "Ultra." Those, are the highest possible in-game settings, period, and that is what was playable on AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 at 4K.

As you can see AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 is averaging near 88 FPS at 4K with 8X MSAA and the highest in-game settings. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 averages near 83 FPS. That means AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 is near 7% faster than the GeForce GTX 1080 at the same settings. This is the fastest we’ve ever seen the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 against the GeForce GTX 1080 in all of our testing.

The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, however, does destroy both the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 and GeForce GTX 1080 performance in this game at 4K. GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is 38% faster than the AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 and 47% faster than GeForce GTX 1080.

There is no doubt AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 is a strong competitor in Forza Motorsport 7 at 4K. Being able to play the game at the highest settings with 8X MSAA means AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 is a great video card for this game at 4K.
