Enermax Platimax DF 1200W PSU Review

If you are looking for a powerhouse of a PSU that is shoehorned into what is a tiny ATX package for the wattage, the Platimax D.F. (Dust Free) PSU may be worthy of your short list. As the name suggests, this PSU sports excellent power efficiency and is fully modular and that could make your HEDT build a lot easier.

Enermax Technology Corporation is a company that is well known in the world of power supplies and general computing alike. Founded in 1990, Enermax has made a name for itself by providing solid performing power supplies, among other computer components, cases, and accessories. Enermax' current lines of power supplies encompass a wide range of products targeted at various market segments. In addition to being a retail presence with its Enermax brand power supplies, Enermax Technology Corporation used to be one of the few true OEM designers of power supplies. Its power supplies however, only rarely showed up under other labels including Grow Up Japan, Sapphire, and its house brand Lepa with that time of independent design and production seeming to have passed. Today, we are looking at the newest entry in the Enermax Platimax DF line the Platimax DF 1200W (EPF1200EWT) which comes from CWT.

Channel Well Technology (CWT) was founded and began manufacturing power supplies in 1993. Since 1993 Channel Well Technology products have shown up under various guises including Antec, Xclio, 2theMax, CWT, Thermaltake, Xigmatek, Enermax, and Corsair. While most familiar to our US users from when they used to provide OEM services for Antec, CWT is one of the more complete OEM manufacturers as they have a fairly high level of vertical integration providing transformers all the way up to its well designed independently regulated SMPS.

Twice The Dust In The Wind?

The Enermax Platimax DF 1200W is the second product we have seen from the Platimax DF line of power supplies (the previous unit being the Platimax DF 600W). That said, today's Platimax DF 1200W is going to be playing in an entirely different realm with its huge 1200W capacity. At this power level the words "value" and "mainstream" aren't usually a thing. Instead, we are usually looking at "flagship" or "high end" or "enthusiast" types of words. So, expectations generally run a bit higher when you are dealing with these units. That said, we'd expect that the Platimax DF 1200W would be closer to the "high end" and "enthusiast" end of the spectrum anyway given what we saw from the previous 600W unit which was a very good performer. However, just because the half sized unit was a good performer, that does not guarantee the full size unit will be one as well so we're going to have to put the screws to this unit today. Before moving on to do that though, let's see what Enermax has to say about this unit and its product placement:

Platimax D.F. power supply series is 80 PLUS Platinum certified in 160mm depth, featuring full modular cable design and stylish individual sleeved cables SLEEMAX. Moreover, Platimax D.F. is built with ENERMAX patented DFRTM (Dust Free Rotation) technology with smart semi-fanless control ensuring silent operation. Users can activate the DFRTM function at any time during operation through the unique D.F. switch. Platimax D.F. is surely a perfect solution for high-end gaming rigs or multi-GPU systems.

With that said, let's take a look at what we get when we purchase the Enermax Platimax DF 1200W power supply in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
