Seasonic PRIME 1000W Gold Power Supply Review

Seems like yesterday that we would never need a 1000 watt power supply again, but maybe Seasonic knew something we did not. This 1000W monster has some new tricks up its sleeve internally, but let's see if this all makes for a better, more efficient high end computer PSU. Spoiler: This is "the best" 1000w PSU we have ever reviewed.

Introduction

In the power supply realm, when consumers think of quiet and efficient power supplies one of the first companies that comes to mind is Seasonic. Today we our looking at a brand new Seasonic unit that is part of their PRIME Gold series. In this review, we will specifically be looking at the 1000W model in the PRIME Gold series (SSR-1000GD Active PFC F3).

Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 40 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and its reputation for quality, has lead to an explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, XFX, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

Whose Gold is Best?

With today's $190 Seasonic PRIME 1000W Gold we are looking at both a familiar and a new unit from Seasonic. Familiar in that we have now seen a number of PRIME based units overall, but new in that this is the first 1000W PRIME model and the first in the PRIME Gold Series we have seen. So, while we have a bit of history with the PRIME units that has been excellent overall, we have yet to push that 1000W boundary. On top of that, with this unit being a Gold unit instead of a Titanium or Platinum unit it seems as if Seasonic is going to be slotting this product in a bit below those product lines. So then, we are going to have to see how moving to a product line that is just a bit below previous ones affects things overall. In the past, the step from Titanium to Platinum did not see major issues and so today we would hope that the step from Platinum to Gold would be similar. However, before moving on to test that let's see what Seasonic has to say about this unit:

The Seasonic PRIME Gold 1000 watt power supply includes premium components for a great performance. The 80 Plus Gold certification paired with Seasonic stringent Micro Tolerance Load Regulation produces high quality output for power users. Seasonic engineers have developed a Cable-free Connection Design, where a highly conductive copper plate replaces the traditionally used individual cables for a cleaner design and better power efficiency. Fully modular cable connections provide a flexible solution for optimized cable management to reduce clutter and increase internal airflow within the system.

Let’s move on now and see what we can expect when a user purchases the PRIME 1000W Gold power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
