SilverStone SX800-LTI SFX-L Power Supply Review

SilverStone continues on its march to absolutely own the small form factor PSU market. This PSU is a huge 800 watts worth of power shoehorned into a SFX-L sized package all while claiming "silent" operation with fanless modes as well. Along with that is a healthy amount of PCIe power plugs and claims of unsurpassed efficiency.

SilverStone Technology is a company best known for its high quality cases but its product lines extend into other components such as cooling, power, fans, storage, and so on. As a company, Silverstone has built up this impressive product repertoire in a very short time having been founded in 2003. Today, however we are interested in its power supplies which are comprised of the Strider, SFX/SFX-L, Nightjar, Gemini, Essential, and Zeus model lines that range from 300W to 1500W DC output. For this review, we are looking at SilverStone’s current largest capacity SFX-L series power supply, the SX800-LTI, which is produced in conjunction with Enhance.

Enhance Electronics Co. Ltd. was founded over 20 years ago in 1986. While a major power supply OEM Enhance is not nearly as well known to most users as some other OEMs as its core business focus has been outside of the desktop market in areas such as servers, embedded, and telecom markets. However, its products have started to surface in the US consumer realm in the last year or so under the likes of SilverStone, Silverpower, Antec, Cooler Master, and Thermaltake, as well as the occasional Enhance branded model.

Is It Time for the SFX-L's To Skip That Second Trip To The Buffet?

When it comes to products that are smaller than ATX/EPS power supplies one of the more prolific brands through our testing over the years has been SilverStone. Certainly other brands offer some of these less common form factor units as well, but none of them seem to have the same focus on power density that we have seen from SilverStone and today is not different. In fact, with today's SX800-LTI SilverStone might be setting a record even for themselves with how much power they are cramming into such a small space. Now this unit is an SFX-L unit, rather than an SFX unit, so there is a bit more space to work with than in the traditional SFX form factor. Still, 800W out of this small of a package means we are either going to see an impressive power supply or an impressive fire. I wonder which it will be? Before moving on though, let's see what SilverStone has to say about this specialty item:

Since its launch in 2015, the SFX-L form factor has garnered popular recognition and support among enthusiasts with its larger 120mm fan able to achieve better balance of power and quietness in small form factor PCs than what was possible with standard SFX. And as a leader in power supply miniaturization, SilverStone has continued its efforts in advancing the SFX-L forward to reach ever higher limit.

The SX800-LTI not only has unprecedented 800 watts of power output but also has the highest level of 80 PLUS efficiency with a Titanium rating. It includes all features available from top of the line SilverStone PSUs such as flexible flat cables, all Japanese capacitors and advanced semi-fanless capability. For those looking to build the most efficient small form factor systems possible with great quality and power, the SX800-LTI is definitely the top choice.

Let’s move on and see what we can expect when a user purchases the SX800-LTI power supply at retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
