Seasonic Flagship PRIME 850W Power Supply Review

Seasonic is one of our long-time favorites when it comes to high power and high efficiency desktop computer power supplies. Seasonic does not introduce wave after wave of new PSU series, so when it does come across with a new platform it gets our attention. Is the TITANIUM rated PRIME 850W worthy of yours?

Introduction

In the power supply realm, when consumers think of quiet and efficient power supplies one of the first companies that comes to mind is Seasonic. Today, we have our second look at a power supply that is part of Seasonic's new flagship PRIME series. In this review, we will specifically be looking at the 850W model in the PRIME series (SSR-850TD Active PFC F3).

Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 40 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and its reputation for quality, has lead to an explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, XFX, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

Oh, It's PRIME Time Alright. Yes It Is.

Today's PRIME 850W is the latest in a long line of power supplies that we have seen from Seasonic and it is following hot on the heels of the PRIME 750W we recently reviewed. Given how the review of the PRIME 750W went, today we are hoping for a repeat performance because the PRIME 750W was probably the best power supply we have seen in a very long time! Of course, the problem with following a showing like that is, well, following a showing like that. Any little deviation, or blip, or drop, or change is going to get hyper analyzed no matter how inconsequential it is in the grand scheme of things. So, before we move ahead and hyper analyze the hell out of the PRIME 850W, let's see what Seasonic has to say about this unit:

The creation of the PRIME Series is a renewed testimony of SeaSonic's determination to push the limits of power supply design in every aspect. This elegant-looking, exclusive lineup of new products will include 80 PLUSآ® Titanium - in the range of 650 W to 850 W, and Platinum-, Gold-rated units in the range of 850 W to 1200 W, with excellent electrical characteristics, top-level components and fully modular cabling.

OK, with much the same advertising as we saw with the PRIME 750W, let’s move on now and see what we can expect when a user purchases the PRIME 850W power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
