AMD 7th Gen Bristol Ridge & Stoney Ridge Announcement

You probably have not noticed, but we do not spend a lot of time focussing on AMD's APU technology here at HardOCP. AMD does some incredible things graphically inside its small cool running APU packages for the most part. Today, we get two new APUs and all the slides to share with you. And a Live Stream with more Polaris information!

Bristol Ridge & Stoney Ridge APUs

I am going to give you the highlights here, and later we will put the full video stream event into this article. Steve should have it showing live on the HardOCP news page right now, and it is supposed to have some Polaris information as well.

The Bristol Ridge and Stoney Ridge APUs are AMD's 7th generation APUs. Bristol Ridge is the high end parts, which will carry the A12 and A10 part numbers. The Stoney Ridge parts will be A9, A6, and E2 part numbers.

The Bristol Ridge A12 and A10 parts will now have dual channel DDR4 support up to 2400MHz with AVFS optimizations. The parts are built upon the same basic architecture as the Carrizo cores that were launched last year. Of course now these have access to more memory bandwidth with improvements specifically targeted to delivering web video. Base frequencies are 2.5Ghz and 2.8GHz with maximum frequencies being 3.4GHz and 3.5GHz.

The Stoney Ridge parts get a bit more of a clock bump compared to last gen with the A9, A6, and E2 coming in at 2.9GHz/3.5GHz, 2.4GHz/2.8GHz, and 2.0GHz/2.2GHz respectively. These parts now have single channel 2133MHz DDR4 support as well as now being based on the Excavator core of yesteryear. Again lots of hardware improvements have been made here to be specific to video.

All of these new 7th generation parts will have HDMI 2.1 interfaces, PCIe Gen 3.0, MJPEG Decode, VP9 Decode, and probably most importantly looking forward, H.265 Hardware Decode. Enjoy.
