NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition Preview

The second video card in the NVIDIA next generation Pascal GPU architecture is finally here, we will explore the GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition video card. In this limited preview today we will look at performance in comparison to GeForce GTX 980 Ti and Radeon R9 Fury X as well as some preview overclocking.

Evaluation Method

We evaluate what each video card configuration can supply us in terms of a playable gaming experience while supplying the best culmination of resolution and "eye candy" graphical settings. We focus on quality and immersion of the gameplay experience rather than how many frames per second the card can get in a canned benchmark or prerecorded timedemo situation that often do not represent real gameplay like you would experience at home. Then we will follow with apples-to-apples testing in with minimum, maximum, and average framerates.

Driver Setup

AMD Drivers

For all AMD GPUs we are using Crimson Edition 16.5.1.

We re-used game data from our GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition Review on May 19th for this evaluation. In light of a newer AMD Crimson Edition (16.5.3) being released since then we did go back and double check our performance in each game to make sure it has not changed. There is no reference in the changelog of the newer driver affecting any of the games we are using in this evaluation and we did not detect any change in performance in the games testing out 16.5.3.

There was one exception, Ashes of the Singularity in DX12 mode. We did detect faster performance in Ashes of the Singularity in specifically DX12 using AMD Crimson Edition 16.5.3 and the latest patch in the game utilizing the benchmark utility. Therefore, for our Ashes of Singularity data all of it is freshly updated using the latest patch just released and the newest AMD Crimson Edition 16.5.3. No other games were affected in performance, so 16.5.1 stands as the best performance in those games.

NVIDIA Drivers

For the GeForce GTX 980 Ti we are using NVIDIA supplied driver 368.13 used in the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition Review.

For the new GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition NVIDIA supplied a newer driver, 368.19 for use on that video card. 368.19 does not contain any driver performance improvements in the games we are using today over 368.13 therefore GeForce GTX 980 Ti is being tested with the best possible performance under 368.13. Except in Ashes of the Singularity, we did go ahead and re-run all benchmark data using the new patch that was released in this game, therefore GeForce GTX 980 Ti was run with 368.19 in Ashes of the Singularity.
