FSP Hydro X 650W Power Supply Review

FSP does not have much to say about its Hydro X in terms of marketing speak, but it does hit the high points that enthusiast system builders are looking for: "Silent operation, High efficiency ≧ 90%, Full Japan-made electrolytic capacitors, Powerful single +12V rail design, Ribbon cables, and Complete protection: OCP, OVP, SCP, OPP, OTP."

Introduction

FSP Group is one of the few actual power supply manufacturers and can be found providing OEM services for a number of other brands at various times including OCZ, Zalman, AOpen, Antec, SilverStone, Super Talent, Sigma, and many more. This wide distribution of power supplies by FSP is not surprising given that it has been in business since 1993 and is one of the top 10 producers of power supplies in the world. FSP has previously been regarded as a manufacturer of basic workhorse type power supplies that "just gets the job done". However, over the last couple of years FSP has put a good bit of effort into developing a number of high powered and higher end computer power supplies at the retail level. Today, we are seeing our first product representing the Hydro X product line from FSP, the Hydro X 650W (HGX650).

Does X Mark the Spot Even in Water?

The most recent FSP products we have seen have been from their higher end model lines such as the Hydro G and AURUM PT. However, a much bigger segment of the power supply market exists just below these top tier products and just above the mainstream category where we have seen a couple of products from FSP in the past (those units have not fared as well as their higher end products). It is then with great interest that, today, we have our first go at this sort of middle realm between premium and more mainstream products from FSP with the Hydro X 650W. Given the recent success we have seen from FSP we certainly hope that the Hydro X 650W we be another winning product. However, the closer to mainstream the product line is the tougher things get as the market gets more and more price sensitive and there is competition from just about everyone. So, today's Hydro X 650W will not only have to be a good performer but it will also have to provide serious value if FSP wants to claw out an even bigger market share with the Hydro X line. Before moving on to see if they are successful at that, let's see what FSP has to say about these units:
