FSP HYDRO G 650W Power Supply Review

While FSP may not be a PSU brand that is on the tip of your tongue, we have been reviewing FSP computer power supplies now for 8 years, and the fact of the matter is that these units have been getting better and better over time. Where does the new Hydro G 650W fit into that progression?

Introduction

FSP Group is one of the few actual power supply manufacturers and can be found providing OEM services for a number of other brands at various times including OCZ, Zalman, AOpen, Antec, SilverStone, Super Talent, Sigma, and many more. This wide distribution of power supplies by FSP is not surprising given that it has been in business since 1993 and is one of the top 10 producers of power supplies in the world. FSP has previously been regarded as a manufacturer of basic workhorse type power supplies that "just gets the job done". However, over the last couple of years FSP has put a good bit of effort into developing a number of high powered and higher end computer power supplies at the retail level. Today, we are seeing our second product representing the Hydro G product line from FSP, the Hydro G 650W (HG650).

Well, Water and Electricity Went Together Fine Last Time

Until recently, the only high end power supplies that we have seen from FSP have been members of the AURUM series of power supplies. However, we recently saw the Hydro G 750W which turned out to be an excellent product at an excellent price. So, today, we are going back to the trough (so to speak) with a look at the Hydro G 650W. Given our previous results, we certainly expect good things from the Hydro G 650W today and the task will be no easier than with the 750W model as in the ~650W realm FSP will be facing a lot of competition once more. Before moving on to see if this unit is going to be upsetting any tables, let’s see what FSP expects from this power supply:

FSP Hydro G series stands for the needs of PC DIY enthusiasts and gamers who want a high end PSU with stylish ID design but do not want to compromise electronic performance at all.

By server grade circuit and advanced thermal layout design, Hydro G series deliver full load (wattage) at 50آ°C ambient temperature. Silent operation is considered by intelligent fan speed control circuit design with 0dBA function to fulfill gamers need in playing games.

Moving on now, let’s see what we can expect when a user purchases the FSP Hydro G 650W power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
