DEEPCOOL DQ550ST 550W Power Supply Review

DEEPCOOL is not the first brand that comes to mind when you think about PSUs. But when a company gives you a feature set like this, "120mm FDB Bearing PWM fan with specially designed fan-blade, enjoys higher wind-pressure, super silent and excellent performance," we have to take a look. I loves me some wind-pressure.

Introduction

Today, we are looking at a product from a somewhat less well known company, in North America, in the PC enthusiast realm; Beijing DEEPCOOL Industries Co., Ltd. DEEPCOOL is a Chinese company founded in 1996 that has generally been known for its line of air coolers, all-in-one liquid coolers, cooling fans, computer cases, and power supplies. Today, however, it is the power supply side of the house at DEEPCOOL that we are most interested in given their lower profile here in North America. The unit we are looking at as our first DEEPCOOL branded power supply is the DQ550ST (DQ550ST) produced by CWT.

Channel Well Technology (CWT) was founded and began manufacturing power supplies in 1993. Since 1993 Channel Well Technology products have shown up under various guises including Antec, Xclio, 2theMax, CWT, Thermaltake, Xigmatek, and Corsair. While most familiar to our US users from when they used to provide OEM services for Antec, CWT is one of the more complete OEM manufacturers as they have a fairly high level of vertical integration providing transformers all the way up to its well designed independently regulated SMPS. However, CWT has been stretching out over the last few years and they are providing OEM services for a number of brands as today’s unit demonstrates.

A Cool Little Piece of Kit?

Today's DEEPCOOL DQ550ST is the first power supply we have seen sold under the DEEPCOOL brand. While 550W is not a power level where we find a lot of real marquee units, the 550W realm is one where almost every brand of significance has products available so DEEPCOOL almost has to offer something here. Given this situation, the DQ550ST (like the recent Rosewill Quark-550) is going to be facing a lot of competition from a lot of other brands that have much longer histories of making quality power supplies and have much greater name recognition in North America. So, if DEEPCOOL tries to be super aggressive with their product placement and feature set initially it may be somewhat difficult for DEEPCOOL to break out immediately unless they absolute kill it in every single aspect. However, unlike the Rosewill Quark-550 we recently saw which ran into a similar set of circumstances, this unit seems a bit less ambitious given the specs on the unit which may allow DEEPCOOL the time they need to slowly build their brand. Beyond that, DEEPCOOL has this to say about the DQ550ST:

DQ550ST is certified with 80 plus Gold with 87% to 90% electrical efficiency enabling lower heat generation and lower operating cost. Outstanding and stable performance makes it one of the greatest PSU of Deepcool. DQ550ST is capable of providing 550W continuous electrical supply under 50℃. It is equipped with 120mm speed adjustable silent fan. DQ550ST is sure to be one of the most ideal equipment for gamers.

That said, the DQ550ST is supposed to be "one of the greatest PSU of DEEPCOOL" so DEEPCOOL certainly thinks that this product will at lest be above entry level. With that being the case today, we are very interested in seeing what the best DEEPCOOL has to offer looks like in absolute terms and relative to the competition. Let’s move on and see what we can expect when a user purchases the DEEPCOOL DQ550ST power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
