FirePower Fatal1ty 750W Power Supply Review

The Fatal1ty Series PSUs by Firepower Technology may seem to be something new in the world of computer power supplies, but really it is not. That said, Firepower is somewhat new in the PSU world, so let's see where they are headed right now.

Introduction

FirePower Technology Inc is a very new player in the realm of power supplies having been established in 2014. The history behind this company is both very long and very short. Very short as FirePower came into being by buying the power supply division assets of OCZ Technology (Toshiba acquired the SSD business) when they went bankrupt, again. Very long ago OCZ purchased PC Power & Cooling prior to its demise and PC Power & Cooling had predated OCZ Technology's first incorporation in 2000 by being founded in 1992.

So, FirePower Technology today is somewhat of an old-meets-new without a direct continuation from its "predecessors." Interestingly, many of the pre-bankruptcy product lines are still listed as being active by FirePower and those include the "PC Power & Cooling Signature Series Silencer MkIII," "PC Power & Cooling Signature Series Turbo-Cool," "ModXStream Series by FirePower," "ZX Series by FirePower," "ZS Series by FirePower," "CoreXStream Series by FirePower," "ZT Series by FirePower," and the "Fatal1ty Signature Series by FirePower." Over the years, we have reviewed products from most of those lines when those were part of PC Power & Cooling or OCZ, and the majority of those lines today are the same platforms we saw then. However, we never did review one of the Fatal1ty units and that platform has undergone a revision. So, today, we have in the Fatal1ty 750W (FPS0750-A4M00 ) which is produced in conjunction with Sirfa/High Power for review.

Sirfa Electronics Co., Ltd. is a name that is not that familiar to most users but Sirfa has been around since 1996 when Sirtec established Sirfa as a factory in the Sirtec group on mainland China. In June 2008, Sirtec sold off its interest in Sirfa making the company independent of the Sirtec brand but still in business with High Power. As such, while we have not seen any Sirfa produced power supplies under the Sirfa brand, some of the Sirtec units of the past were produced at the Sirfa facility. Additionally, we have seen Sirfa providing OEM services for Thermaltake, Enermax, PC Power & Cooling, Tuniq, Lepa, SilverStone, and others with very mixed results.

Does this Phoenix Actually Rise From the Ashes?

Today's review of the Fatal1ty 750W is somewhat of an egg-in-the-face moment, due to the last PC Power & Cooling/OCZ unit we reviewed being the Silencer MkIII 750W, and at that time, we said farewell to these product lines, as well as OCZ/PC Power & Cooling as a whole, on account of the fact that OCZ was bankrupt. Obviously, one could take Mark Twain's famous quip of "the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated" and try to apply that here today. However, the Fatal1ty 750W is more than the same-old same-old that was available before the bankruptcy. So, in a way, OCZ and PC Power & Cooling really are dead and buried, with FirePower now being a new entity. So, today we have more of a phoenix rising than a not-quite-dead-yet moment.

We have to wonder what exactly we are getting from the Fatal1ty 750W since this is a new product from a new company without a long history of product development. For that, we turn initially to the Fatal1ty product page to see what FirePower has to say about this unit:
