ASUS ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Platinum vs. AMD R9 295X2

In this follow-up evaluation we take the ASUS ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Platinum video card, overclock it while using its liquid cooling system and compare it to the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 video card stock and overclocked. Can this elite single GPU keep up with the stock dual GPU video that is very close in price?


Dying Light

Dying Light is a new game from developer Techland and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. This is a survival horror game with the theme of the ever popular zombie apocalypse. This game uses Chrome Engine 6, which is the latest iteration of this game engine and so far only this game and one other are using it new for 2015. It is a next generation engine, and this game supports many advanced 3D effects including NVIDIA created 3D features.

For our run-through we are going to be playing in "The Slums" and complete a mission following checkpoints. We have the game patched up to version 1.5.0 and our run-through is rather lengthy. We've found anything with lots of foliage, trees, grassy areas, seem to bring down performance more than the open areas. Note that we did upgrade Dying Light to version 1.5.0 for these tests today. We ran ASUS ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Platinum evaluation on this new patch and everything is up to date. We did find performance higher with this new patch on the GTX 980 versus patch 1.4.0.

Both the ASUS ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Platinum overclocked video card and the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 video card are capable of running this game at the highest in-game settings at 1440p.

Important to mention is that the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 does not have a profile for Dying Light to enable CrossFire by default with this version of the driver. We had to select the option in the Catalyst Control Center to enable CrossFire on games that do not have profiles in the driver. This worked and gave us a tremendous performance boost with CrossFire. In fact, we have found this works a lot better now with patch 1.5.0 than it did with patch 1.4.0. We are getting more CrossFire performance thanks to the new patch.

As you can see, the overclocked GTX 980 cannot keep up with the raw performance put out by two AMD Radeon R9 290X GPUs in CrossFire. Even though the GTX 980 is overclocked the highest we've seen it, a stock clocked AMD Radeon R9 295X2 is still 10% faster. Though, one could say, the overclocked GTX 980 is close in performance by 10% of the Radeon R9 295X2, which is certainly impressive in that sense.

Since the highest playable setting here is also the highest settings possible in the game at 1440p there is no need for further apples-to-apples testing. We will have 4K comparisons later on in this evaluation.
