Seasonic G-Series: G-450 Power Supply Review

Seasonic is continually short on marketing but long on performance, and we are good with that. Today's 450 watt G Series computer power supply makes more sense in this new world of lower power desktop CPUs and GPUs. Does the G-450 give its users solid power in this lower end of the spectrum range at the right cost?

Introduction

In the power supply realm, when consumers think of quiet and efficient power supplies one of the first companies that comes to mind is Seasonic and today we have our 17th look at a Seasonic branded unit. This review covers another entrant in the G-Series of power supplies for Seasonic, the G-450 (SSR-450RM Active PFC F3).

Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 30 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and its reputation for quality, has lead to an explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, XFX, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

Small Capacity, Big Performance?

The Seasonic G-450 is the 17th power supply we have seen from Seasonic and it is currently the smallest capacity member of the G-Series. When we move down to the 450W level these days, we see fewer and fewer real quality power supplies. As such, the addition of a G-Series unit in this space could be a real boon to users who are looking for lower capacity solutions given what we have seen from previous G-Series units. Before moving on to look at this smallest member of the G-Series, let's see what Seasonic has to say about this unit:

As has been the case with the previous G-Series units, we really don't have any idea how this unit is going to (or is supposed to) differ in the market from other Seasonic products based on what we get from Seasonic on its webpage. We have, however, seen other Seasonic G-Series units so we know this is their mainstream mid-level product though. Let's move on and see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the Seasonic G-450 power supply in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality this will become clear.
