HDD vs. SSD Real World Gaming Performance

We've upgraded all our video card test systems to SSDs recently. But does it actually make a difference in real world gaming performance? Today we are going to test the claim that an SSD will improve your gameplay experience compared to a spinning hard drive. We test several games apples-to-apples on our video card test system.

Evaluation Method

We evaluate what each video card configuration can supply us in terms of a playable gaming experience while supplying the best culmination of resolution and "eye candy" graphical settings. We focus on quality and immersion of the gameplay experience rather than how many frames per second the card can get in a canned benchmark or prerecorded timedemo situation that often do not represent real gameplay like you would experience at home. Then we will follow with apples-to-apples testing in with minimum, maximum, and average framerates.

We are using Windows 8.1 x64 on both hard drives, clean install, all updates installed. We are using the AMD Radeon R9 290X with Catalyst 13.11 Beta 9.5 driver.

We ran Windows 8.1 Disk Optimizer before each game test on both hard drives.
