Corsair AX1200i Power Supply Review
Corsair has a refresh today that talks to its high end line of high power PSUs. The AX1200i comes in touting "platinum" efficiency and "an unprecedented level of monitoring and performance customization." How does the AX1200i perform out-of-the-box and does it actually bring value at its huge price?
Corsair is known in enthusiast circles as a premier supplier of high performance memory and has risen to become one of the most talked about power supply brands around. Corsair was able to establish such presence through rigorous design standards, excellent support, and the use of quality OEM’s such as Seasonic and CWT. Since its entrance into the PSU field, Corsair has established a number of lines of power supplies to address and overlap just about every market segment with its GS, CX, VX, TX, HX, and AX lines. Today, Corsair has for us a revamp of one of the launch products in the AX line of power supplies, the AX1200i (CP-9020008-NA). This power supply is produced by Flextronics.
Flextronics International Ltd. is an electronics manufacturing services provider, which makes it a bit atypical from the general consumer SMPS OEM, founded in 1969 and headquartered in Singapore. Flextronics provides a wide range of manufacturing, supply chain management and procurement, logistical support, and technical support services for industries ranging from automotive, to medical, to consumer electronic, and industrial component production. Some of its more familiar customers that it provides manufacturing services, or outright production for are familiar to many users including Lenovo, Lego Group, Microsoft, RIM, LG, SUN, HP, Kodak, Verizon, Amazon, Samsung, Siemens, Apple, and many more. Flextronics subsidiary FlexPower, was founded in 2005 and Flextronics claims that following the acquisition of Friwo and Coldwatt, plus internal growth and development that it is now the "4th largest power supply company in the world." However, its production of products for the consumer SMPS market is still rather limited with Corsair bringing the first product from Flextronics/FlexPower to the enthusiast we have seen to date.
Time for a Refit
Looking back now, it has been over 2 years since Corsair brought out the original AX1200. When it was introduced, the AX1200 was a very good power supply, but the sands of time have been passing and there is a bit more competition in the market than there was then. Indeed, as times goes on it has become harder and harder for Corsair to retain the extreme amount of luster that its power supply brand originally carried. With today’s re-launching of the top tier of the AX series, we certainly have hope that the less-than-stellar re-launches that we have seen over the last year are behind us and Corsair has really got a fine fighting ship on its hands. Before moving on, let’s see what Corsair says about this unit:
The revolutionary AX1200i is the first desktop PC power supply to use digital (DSP) control and Corsair Link to bring you an unprecedented level of monitoring and performance customization. The DSP in the AX1200i makes on-the-fly adjustments for incredibly tight voltage regulation, 80 PLUS® Platinum Efficiency, and clean, stable power.
Moving on let’s see what we can expect when a user purchases the Corsair AX1200i supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
