Antec High Current Pro Platinum 1KW Power Supply Review

When it comes to PSUs, we hear "platinum" getting thrown around a good bit lately, but when you apply that level of efficiency to a 1000 watt PSU, the engineers had better have their ducks in line. Antec is launching a new flagship PSU and the company is making no bones about it, the HCP Platinum 1000W is "the pinnacle of power supplies."

Introduction

One of the most prevalent companies in the consumer power supply realm, and general enthusiast PC realm, is Antec. Antec is a company that has been kicking around the PC DIY market since 1986 and since then it has become one of the most widely known computer enthusiast brand names. In addition to power supplies, Antec has product lines that include cases for work and play, cooling solutions, lighting, and other accessories. Over the years Antec has used a number of OEM providers for its power supplies including HEC, CWT, FSP, Enhance, Seasonic, and recently Delta. Some of the older Antec CWT solutions were notorious for being plagued by the "Fuhjiyyu sudden death syndrome," but in the last couple of years or so Antec has dropped these older designs in favor of new products and designs. Today, we will be looking at brand new offering from a product line that is an evolution of Antec's High Current Pro (HCP) series. That product is the 1000W model HCP-1000 Platinum (HCP-1000 Platinum). This particular unit again comes to us courtesy of Antec's partnership with Delta.

Delta Electronics Inc is part of the Delta Group and is one of the older presences in the power market in Taiwan as the Delta Group was founded in 1971. As an OEM Delta has been popular among higher end server solutions and for a selection of prebuilt PCs from major worldwide consumer PC OEMs for many years but rarely has Delta shown up in enthusiast applications. Currently, Delta claims the title of the world's largest supplier of switching power supplies. However, even with a lack of presence in the power supply side of the DIY market, Delta is still certainly a known commodity as most enthusiast users have certainly encountered its fans at one point or another. Today’s review of the Antec HCP-1000 Platinum gives us another look at a Delta-based offering branded by Antec.

Even the Pro's Can Elevate Their Game

The Antec HCP-1000 Platinum is the third power supply we have seen that has been spawned from the High Current Pro (HCP) branding and, today, it represents the first 80 Plus Platinum rated power supply we have seen from Antec. Previous members of the HCP line have been a bit split with the HCP-850 being passing, but not amazing, while the HCP-1200 was, at one time, the best 1200W power supply we had ever seen. Today, we certainly have high expectations for the HCP-1000 Platinum and we hope that it is starting a bit of a new shout from what are the deep roots of the HCP-1200. Before moving on, what does Antec have to say about this unit?

Antec’s High Current Pro Platinum series is the pinnacle of power supplies. High Current Pro Platinum is fully modular with a revolutionary 20+8-pin MBU socket for the needs of tomorrow. By using a PSU that is 80 PLUSآ® PLATINUM & ErP Lot 6: 2013 certified, operating up to 94% efficient, you can reduce your electricity bill by up to 25% when compared to many other power supplies. HCP Platinum’s innovative 16-pin sockets create a new level of flexibility by doubling the modular connectivity, supporting two different 8-pins connectors and even future connectors of 10, 12, 14 or 16-pins. Backed by a 7 year warranty and lifetime global 24/7 support, the HCP-1000 Platinum embodies everything a power supply can accomplish today.

Moving on let’s see what we can expect when a user purchases the Antec HCP-1000 Platinum power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
