NZXT HALE82 850W Power Supply Review

NZXT comes to us touting its HALE82 PSU telling us it has high working efficiencies, 100% Japanese caps, a modular design, and "Keeping it Safe" over voltage and short circuit protections. And considering this is a unit built by Seasonic, it might just be one that is worth looking at. Is it anything special though?

Introduction

NZXT Corporation is a relative new comer to the DIY enthusiast market having been incorporated in 2004. To date, the company is best known for its wide range of personal computer chassis that stretch from the simple and understated to the eye-poppingly garish. At the same time, NZXT has maintained and expanded an increasing line of other peripherals, input devices, and power supplies. Today, we are looking at our second power supply from NZXT and it comes from its newest line, the HALE82 series. The specific unit we are looking at today is the 850W model (HALE82-850-M), and is produced in conjunction with partner Seasonic.

Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 30 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and its reputation for quality, has lead to a real explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

Is the HALE82 Worth the Praise?

The NZXT HALE82 850W is just the second power supply we have seen from NZXT. Their first offering, the HALE90 750W, was an excellent unit in our testing so we certainly are hoping for a repeat performance today. Today’s HALE82 850W, however, seems to be slotted in below the HALE90 series making this unit a bit more of a mainstream unit rather than the high end unit we saw in the NZXT HALE90 750W. The key question today will be, has NZXT been able to move down a bit without completely dropping the ball on quality? Before moving on to testing this question, let’s see what NZXT has to say about these new HALE82 units?

Today, we proudly present the debut of our HALE82 power supplies. The HALE82 comes in 3 wattages: 650W, 750W, and 850W. These PSUs are 80Plus Bronze certified and SLI-Ready. In addition, USA and Canada are entitled to our new exclusive service program called Less-Than-Three. This service is to show that NZXT will ensure that your PSU never fails if you encountered any problems. We will cover 2 way shipping and get you back in the game! You can find our Less Than Three service page here.

Let’s move on now so we can see what we can expect when a user purchases NZXT HALE82 850W supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
