Serious Sam 3: BFE

Serious Sam 3: BFE is an action first-person shooter game, or FPS game. The modern first person shooter genre focuses more on skill, accuracy, and real life combat situations. The Serious Sam series resembles a more traditional, or old school FPS game where you get a lot of big guns, a lot of ammo, and lay waste to floods of enemies.

Fans of the Serious Sam series will be delighted to hear that this installment includes a moddable version of the game. Players will be able to download mod's created by other people, or create their own mod's. These include creating skins for enemies, changing weapon skins, and altering sounds. One of the more popular modifications will replace C4 with Serious Bombs.

Serious Sam 3: BFE is primarily a single player game, but does have multiplayer features. These include 4-player split screen with gamepad functionality, so friends can sit around one computer screen together. There is 16-player co-operative campaign mode that connects to others online, and a simple Deathmatch mode where players fight each other. Serious Sam 3: BFE is a prequel to the first game in the series, The First Encounter. The story takes place in Egypt, sometime in the 22nd Century, during Mental's invasion of Earth. Players follow the story of the protagonist Sam "Serious" Stone, who tries to fend off the invading Mental and his endless horde in hopes of saving the human race.

The Technology

Serious Sam 3: BFE is a DX9 only game that uses the newest version of the Serious Engine developed by Croteam, Serious Engine 3.5. The Serious Engine has been powering all of the previous games in the franchise. Serious Engine versions 1 and 2 were used in the first and second games respectively.

In 2009 and 2010 Croteam released HD versions of the first two games in the series The First Encounter and The Second Encounter using the next generation Serious Engine 3. This version featured polished, up-to-date graphics with DX9 support.

Serious Engine 3.5 debuts with Serious Sam 3: BFE, and has a plethora of graphics options allowing players to fully customize their visuals and tune computer performance, this includes NVIDIA's newer FXAA technology. Most of the changes in version 3.5 are additional gameplay functions. These include melee attacks, sprinting, aiming down sight, and reloading which are all new to the Serious Sam franchise, and building destruction.
