AMD Bulldozer / FX-8150 Desktop Performance Review

Computer hardware enthusiasts have literally waited for years for AMD's Bulldozer architecture to come to market and we finally see this today in its desktop form, code named Zambezi, brand named AMD FX. In this article we share with you our analysis of Bulldozer's performance in synthetic benchmarks and desktop applications.


3D Rendering

Outside of video encoding, 3D rendering is probably one of the best suited applications areas that take advantage of multiple processor cores.

Cinebench is easily the most widely accepted measuring stick when it comes to 3D rendering. It is publicly used by both AMD and Intel and its supporters.

Cinebench has a single thread option in the benchmark, not that it really shows anything real world, but this will give us a look again at IPC when we are using stock clocks, overclocks, and all cores; different than we did a few pages back.

Things turn out much the same as these did on our IPC page. Thuban looks to edge out Bulldozer in single core performance.

Here we get into what can be looked on as a much more real world scenario. Let's see how these processors do in native form as well as overclocked form with the same 3D rendering workload.

When we again look at the Bulldozer product as a whole instead of core by core, we again see better results. 8120 vs. 2500K at stock and overclocked speeds, we see the 2500K edge out the 8120 by a slight margin. The 2600K again ends up on top in the current generation of processors by a good margin as HyperThreading seems to be bringing a lot to this party. Our $1000 990X again just dominates all others.

In this 3D rendering benchmark we see the stock 8120 beat the 2500K by about 15 seconds. At overclocked speeds the 8120 spanks the 2500K by 25 seconds. At overclocked speeds our 2600K edges out the overclocked 8120 by 8 seconds. As usual the $1000 990X 6C/12T processor takes the win by a solid margin.
