Enermax Platimax 1200W Power Supply Review

Enermax is one of our long time favorite brands when it comes to PSUs. Enermax has proved over and over again that it is one of the world's premier PSU builders. Today it steps into a realm that is tough to compete in and in fact has not ever been seen by any other PSU builders as of yet. 1200 watts that is 80 Plus Platinum certified.

Introduction

Enermax Technology Corporation is a company that is well known in the world of power supplies and general computing alike. Founded in 1990 Enermax has made a name for itself by providing solid performing power supplies, among other computer components, and accessories. Enermax' current lines of power supplies encompass a wide range of products targeted at various market segments including the MaxRevo, MODU87+, PRO87+, Revolution85+, Galaxy EVO, MODU82+, PRO82+, LibertyECO, and Tomahawk series. In addition to being a retail presence with its Enermax brand power supplies, Enermax Technology Corporation appears to be one of the few real OEM designers of power supplies. Its power supplies however, have only rarely shown up under other labels including Grow Up Japan, Sapphire, and its house brand Lepa. Today, we are looking at our first power supply from Enermax’ new "Platimax" line of power supplies with this being the 1200 watt model (EPM1200EWT). This unit is not yet available in retail, but we are told by Enermax Germany, that the unit is to arrive in "September 2011." We have found it listed for $379.00 at one e-tailer, but according to what Ecomaster is reporting to us, the MSRP should be around $329.00.

More Precious Than Gold?

It wasn’t too long ago that we were looking at Enermax’ new flagship line of power supplies, the MaxRevo, with its 1350W offering. Today, however, is a new day and it seems a new day brings us another new flagship product line from Enermax, the Platimax, with its 1200W offering. Next week we'll probably be seeing another flagship product line from Enermax. Ok perhaps not, but the succession of flagship products has been very quick here. Anyway, the Platimax name seems to imply this unit's positioning is going to involve its efficiency as deemed by 80Plus. Previously, we have seen one other 80Plus Platinum unit from Kingwin and that unit easily cruised through our testing as the most efficient power supply we have ever seen, and perhaps one of the best power supplies we have ever seen, period. That unit, however, was only ~1/2 the capacity of today’s 1200W Platimax so it will be of great interest to see how good a job Enermax does when doubling up on that smaller unit. First, let’s see what Enermax has to say about the Platimax 1200W:

80 PLUS PLATINUM challenge, achieved.

ENERMAX enters the 80 PLUS Platinum era with new PLATIMAX power supply series. Debuting at this year’s Computex, the PLATIMAX incorporates ENERMAX's 21 years of knowledge in topologies, thermal solutions, and PCB layout. It creates the performance efficiency to 80 PLUS Platinum level, and still keeps to ENERMAX proud tradition of all-scale safety mechanism to protect your precious system. Together with brother models like MAXREVO, MODU87+, ENERMAX is not only the expert of efficient PSU designer, but also extreme power density and solid quality PSU builder.

Let's move on to see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the Enermax Platimax 1200W in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
