Seasonic X-Series: X-560 Power Supply Review

The first fully modular PSU we have seen from Seasonic aimed the low end in terms of enthusiast's PCs. Seasonic does however move on with a very specialized DC to DC way of conversion that is not seen in other PSUs. Can it stand up to our punishment?

Introduction

In the power supply realm when consumers think of quiet and efficient power supplies one of the first company that comes to mind is Seasonic and today we have our sixth crack at a Seasonic branded unit. This review covers another addition to Seasonic’s X-Series line of power supplies the X-560 (SS-560KM Active PFC F3).

Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 30 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and their reputation for quality, has lead to a real explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

X Marks the Spot, Redux

The Seasonic X-560 is the sixth Seasonic power supply we have seen under Seasonic’s own label, and is now the third from the X-Series line of power supplies that we have seen. This series was launched a bit over a year ago now with the release of the X-750. At the time, the X-750 represented Seasonic’s second generation consumer DC-DC design and it was flat out a revolutionary design in the enthusiast PSU market. In the intervening time frame we have seen a few other units fill in the X-Series spectrum all the way down to the amazing fan-less X-400FL. Today however, we move back into the middle of the current range of the X-Series, though units up to 1200 watts are in the works, with the X-560. Will this unit carry on in the fine form of the X-Series units before it? Well, we aim to find out, but first what does Seasonic have to say about this unit:

The very first full modular multi-output ATX, high-wattage power supply that has ever obtained the 80PLUSآ® Gold certification is introduced by Seasonic, this coveted power supply is named "X" and is offered in 560W versions.

Featuring a patent pending design of "DC Connector Module with Integrated VRM", the X Series is set to achieve both near-perfect DC to DC conversion and fully modularized design without compromising efficiency. After a long wait, finally there is a product that delivers the complete package, ultra-high efficiency, greatly improved dynamic response, and customizable cable arrangement that is tailored to meet any individual’s needs.

Now that we know what Seasonic expects from this power supply let’s see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the X-560 in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
