FBI Wants 'Adult Conversation' On Device Encryption

The director of the FBI says he wants to have an adult conversation on encryption next year. I have an idea, why doesn't the FBI build a team of people that can stay one step ahead of the crooks, instead of relying on companies to provide them an "easy" button. frown

FBI Director James Comey warned again Tuesday about the bureau's inability to access digital devices because of encryption and said investigators were collecting information about the challenge in preparation for an "adult conversation" next year. "We are working hard to make people at keyboards feel our breath on their necks and try to change that behavior," he said. "We've got to get to a point where we can reach them as easily as they can reach us and change behavior by that reach-out."

The Simple Solution to Traffic

I am a firm believer that, in order for self-driving cars to truly be efficient and effective, we need to remove humans from the equation entirely. Oddly enough, this video about a "solution to traffice" does a great job of demonstrating why we need to just ban human drivers altogether. wink

Stop Preordering Videogames

While many of you have already ditched the practice of preordering games, there are tons people us that still do. If you are still preordering games, why? What games are you more likely to preorder? Which game are you unwilling to preorder? Is price a factor?

If you’ve ever preordered a videogame and felt disappointed by your purchase later, let me suggest a great thing to try: Stop preordering videogames. Again, if $60 is the sort of cash you might find between your couch cushions, then go nuts. But if there’s even the slightest chance you’ll feel burned, you have an option: just wait.

New RX 400 Series Cards Outed By AMD?

It looks like AMD has inadvertently outed a handful of unreleased RX 400 series video cards. If you hit this link and then click the 'Eligible AMD Computer Systems + Manufacturers' button you will see a host of new cards listed. Probably the most interesting to you guys will be the R9 490 card but there are GPUs ranging from a R5 420 all the way up to a R7 455 as well. I posted the list below in case AMD takes down this page. Thanks to cageymaru for the heads up.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.8.3

AMD has released brand new Crimson Edition 16.8.3 drivers for all you Radeon owners out there. According to AMD, these drivers offer support for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Battlefield 1 Beta and a 10% performance improvement in Rise of the Tomb Raider versus the 16.7.2 drivers on RX 480 cards. Here's a list of known issues as well as resolved issues:

Fixed Issues

  • A random blank or colored screen may be experienced intermittently on some Radeon RX 400 series products while gaming.

Known Issues

  • A few game titles may fail to launch or crash if the AMD Gaming Evolved overlay is enabled. A temporary workaround is to disable the AMD Gaming Evolved "In Game Overlay".

  • Grand Theft Auto Vآ™ may experience an application hang on Radeon RX 400 Series Graphics when playing at 4K resolution in story mode.

  • A small number of 144hz non-FreeSync enabled displays may exhibit flickering during gaming or on desktop.

  • Ark Survival Evolvedآ™ may experience an error message when trying to launch the game in some configurations.

  • DOTA2آ™ may experience an application hang when using the Vulkanآ™ API and changing resolution or game/quality settings.

  • Corruption may be experienced in Rise of the Tomb Raider using the DirectXآ®12 API on some Hybrid Graphics configurations when performing a task switch.

  • Shader Cache may remain be enabled when set to "off" in Radeon Settings on some Hybrid Graphics configurations.

  • Radeon RX 480 graphics may experience intermittent stuttering in The Divisionآ™ when high game settings are used and vsync is enabled.

  • Battlefieldآ™ 4 may experience intermittent crashes when using Mantle. As a work around users are suggested to switch to DirectXآ®11.

  • Radeon Pro Duo may experience a black screen in Total Warآ™: Warhammer with the games API set to DirectXآ®12 and V-Sync enabled.

  • World of Tanksآ™ may experience stuttering after performing a task switch in AMD CrossFire mode.

HTC Makes $5M Investment In VR Gaming Startup

It's a pretty big vote of confidence when HTC, the company behind the Vive VR headset, invests a cool $5 million in your company. The current game from Steel Wool Studios is Quar: Battle for Gate 18 and currently has overall positive reviews on Steam.

HTC is continuing to invest heavily in building up the virtual reality ecosystem that it hopes to one day dominate. Steel Wool Studios, an Oakland-based gaming studio made up of Pixar veterans with a few decades of animation experience under their belts, announced today that it has closed a $5 million round of Series A funding coming entirely from HTC, the manufacturer of the Vive virtual reality headset.

EA Exec Responds To "Worst Company In America" Controversy

Whether we agree or not, most of us know why Electronic Arts has the dubious distinction of being the "Worst Company in America." With that said, do any of you really think this "put players first" initiative will help them shake that title? Or do you think this is all just lip service?

"You try and be defensive and say this is stupid, this is ridiculous; and then you go, 'Maybe there's a kernel of truth here.' Maybe this is a moment we can step back, look in the mirror, look at who we are, look at how we're perceived, and figure out what we need to do to do something about it. Perception is reality so if there perception is that we're not a company that puts players first, then how do we change that?"

Acer's Insane Gaming Laptop Is A Magic Box Of Stupid

Part of me wants to laugh at this laptop (if you can call it that), but the other part of me totally digs the specs on this thing. Yeah, it is pretty ridiculous but in a kinda cool, so-over-the-top-it-isn't-even-funny sorta way. big grin

It's the world's first laptop with a curved screen...not to mention two (2) GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs and a built-in mechanical keyboard. It requires two (2) power supplies to run, and needs five (5) system fans and eight (8) heatpipes to stay cool. It holds up to 64GB of memory and five (5) storage drives at a time.
