China News Agency Reveals First AI Anchor

Xinhua News Agency, the government-run news agency of China, has unveiled their first AI news anchor. The anchor made "his" debut at the World Internet Conference, and the news agency claims he "learns from live broadcasting videos by himself and can read texts as naturally as a professional news anchor." The South China Morning Post claims that the English and Chinese version of the virtual anchor were developed separately, and that they are "now available throughout Xinhua's internet and mobile platforms such as its official Chinese and English apps, WeChat public account, and online TV webpage." News clips featuring the AI anchor are already popping up on Xinhua's Youtube channel. A clip of the Chinese version of the anchor needs a flash plugin to view, but you can check out the English version below:

The AI news anchor was jointly developed by Xinhua News Agency, the official state-run media outlet of China, and Chinese search engine company According to Xinhua, "he" has become a member of its reporting team and can work 24 hours a day on its official website and various social media platforms, reducing news production costs and improving efficiency.
