Mobile Payment Usage Jumps Across the Board Since Apple Pay Release

Retailers are seeing signs of viability in mobile payment since Apple Pay was released. Google Wallet and Softcard, Apple Pay's primary competitors, are also reaping the benefits as consumer awareness increases and Apple haters look for alternatives. Bad news for CurrentC if consumers expect NFC-enable "tap-n-go" in a mobile payment scenario instead of the QR Code reader method.

Whole Foods, the high-end grocery chain, said it had processed more than 150,000 Apple Pay transactions. McDonald’s, which accepts Apple Pay at its 14,000 restaurants in the United States, said Apple Pay accounted for 50 percent of its tap-to-pay transactions. And Walgreens, the nationwide chain of drugstores, said its mobile wallet payments had doubled since Apple Pay came out.
