Senate Committee Approves Mobile Phone Unlocking Bill
It’s been a long uphill (Capitol Hill) battle, but it appears, barring any last minute back room shenanigans, that the long awaited bill that would allow owners to unlock their cellphones when they switch carriers will get its day in front of the full Senate for approval.
The amended Senate bill allows customers to authorize vendors to unlock their phones for them. The bill also instructs the Library of Congress to consider, in a DMCA rulemaking starting later this year, to consider whether other devices, such as tablets, should be eligible for unlocking.
