French 'Three Strikes' Piracy Law Faces Major Reversal

The French government is rethinking the ‘three strike’ policy imposed by then-president Nicolas Sarkozy as a solution to the country’s rising Internet piracy rate. After three years of study of the system, the ‘three strike’ rule was deemed ineffectual and recommended shutting down the agency in charge.

While Hadopi has sent out hundreds of thousands of warnings to those suspected of being pirates, only a handful of cases have reached the third and supposedly final stage. Several of these were thrown out by the courts; others resulted in fines or suspended sentences.
