U.S. Researchers Take on Spam Sites

Researchers at two California universities have reported some inroads to combatting the mountains of email spam generated all over the world. The researchers worked with a billion email messages tracking them to a surprisingly small number of host countries.

If processors refused to authorize online credit card payments to the merchants, "you'd cut off the money that supports the entire spam enterprise," said Stefan Savage of the University of California
