Lasers to Replace Spark Plugs in Combustion Engines

Japanese scientists will unveil the multibeam laser ignition system in Baltimore at the Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics on May 1st. The concept of laser ignition for autos has been widely researched and some small success has been reported in past years. The difference here is the research has resulted in a working model small enough to fit into the engine block, replacing the actual spark plug.

Lasers, Taira explains, can focus their beams directly into the center of the mixture. Without quenching, the flame front expands more symmetrically and up to three times faster than those produced by spark plugs.
