The Next Gen Library: Removing the Books
There has been a trend with students checking out fewer books with each passing year, with a great number of books going 5+ years without a single checkout. Librarians are now focusing on a bookless future with more services offered than a mere repository of books. The Stanford University’s new Engineering Library will open next month with 85% less books.
Clearing out some of the books, the school says, makes room and resources for other endeavors. One librarian explained, "That's what we're so [excited about]...the idea of actually offering more services, offering more workshops, offering more one-on-one time with students."
