Gaming Sales Slip 8% in 2009 Despite Record Holiday Season
NPD Group released sales figures for 2009 that confirm what we already knew: game-related hardware and software sales were down compared to 2008. The record holiday numbers in 09 failed to compensate for the rest of the year, which is reflected in the 8% decline. If you dig deeper into the numbers, you’ll see that PC game sales fell 23% while console and portable games fell 10% when compared to 2008 numbers.
"Clearly, 2009 was a tough year for consumers and the national economy," said Michael D. Gallagher, CEO of the Entertainment Software Association. "However, the bigger picture is one that underscores the industry’s strength; 2009 and 2008 were the highest grossing years in our industry’s history."
