Intel Core 2 Duo Vs AMD Athlon FX

Today Intel flexed a bit more muscle in relation to the Core 2 Duo gaming advantages that they have been promising. Senior Intel VP, Anand Chandrasekher, ran an industry standard DOOM 3 timedemo benchmark comparing AMD’s Athlon FX and Intel’s upcoming Core 2 Duo. What is extremely interesting about this set of gaming benchmarks is that Intel not only compared them on “identical” platforms, but also at identical clock speeds. Both the AMD FX and Intel processors were clocked at 2.6GHz. The AMD machine scored 138 frames per second while the Intel Core 3 Duo machine returned a whopping 177 frames per second. A full 39 fps better comes out to over a 25% increase in gaming performance clock per clock.

Intel went on to discuss more about gaming benchmarks but did not supply any more direct AMD comparisons. However a healthy group of benchmarks from some very popular shooters were shown using their current flagship Pentium for base performance.

As you can see, comparing a 2.93GHz Core 2 Duo against a 3.73 Pentium gives some beautiful 50% performance increase comparisons. Core 2 Duo looks to be shaping up to be a gamer’s dream.
