In 3D graphics, the word “optimization” has now taken on a negative inflection. In the past, when manufacturers say that they are “optimizing” their product for a certain application, it had a very positive spin. Here was a company that was actively working to make their product run faster and better with an application. Ever since ATI released their R200 chip, and the Quake/Quack situation, optimizing has never been the same. Now NVIDIA is caught in this loop, and the accusations of NVIDIA “cheating” and “lying” seem to grow on a daily basis. Let us take a step back and really view the situation as it stands.
