Thermaltake Toughpower DPS G RGB 850W PSU Review

Flashy lights are cool if you are into that kind of thing, but we want to know about the new Thermaltake power supply beyond the pretty hues of red, green, and blue. Toughpower units have weighed in well in the past, but how about in today's market as it is a lot more competitive now.

Today, Thermaltake Technology Company is back for another trip through our power supply testing program with a more value oriented product than we last saw from them. As a company, Thermaltake has a rather short history being founded in just 1999, but in that short time they have grown rapidly. While Thermaltake's primary focus has been on thermal solutions, it has for some time now maintained a group of product lines dedicated to power supplies. The early power supplies in these lines were often of lower quality but over the years they have taken their power supply business in a new, and quite frankly better, direction as they paired with higher quality OEMs like CWT and Enhance. Today, we are looking at another product that is part of the Toughpower Series of power supplies from Thermaltake; the Toughpower DPS G RGB 850W (TPG-0850D-R but also variously listed as PS-TPG-0850DPCGUS-R, PS-TPG-0850DPCG**-R, TPG-850DH3FCG-R, etc depending if you look for the model or part number.). This unit is produced in conjunction with CWT.

Channel Well Technology (CWT) was founded and began manufacturing power supplies in 1993. Since 1993 Channel Well Technology products have shown up under various guises including Antec, Xclio, 2theMax, CWT, Thermaltake, Xigmatek, and Corsair. While most familiar to our US users from when it used to provide OEM services for Antec, CWT is one of the more complete OEM manufacturers as it has a fairly high level of vertical integration providing transformers all the way up to its well designed independently regulated SMPS. Recently however, CWT has begun stretching out and is providing OEM services for a number of brands as today’s unit demonstrates.

Toughpower DPS G, Now in Technicolor!

The Thermaltake Toughpower DPS G RGB 850W is the latest in a very long line of power supplies that we have seen from Thermaltake. In that time, we have seen a few 850W products that span the range from entry level to highend at the time of their release. To date, none of those units have been truly amazing products but they were all at least good products. Today, the DPS G RGB 850W is again from the higherend of Thermaltake's product offerings so we, of course, have highend hopes for this unit. Certainly, the most recent DPS G unit we have seen (the DPS G 1050W Platinum) came through in that regard. However, that unit was an Enhance based offering rather than today's CWT based offering so there is no clear conclusion we can draw yet. So, before moving on to see what this unit can do, let's see what Thermaltake has to say about this unit:
