GeForce GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 FE Overclocking Review

In our combined overclocking review we will overclock the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition and GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition video cards comparing default and overclocked gameplay performance. We will even throw in a TITAN X to see how much faster an overclocked GTX 1080 can offer over the previous performance champion.

Introduction

Since the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition were launched we have been working on several follow-up articles to our original launch reviews to flesh out these two video cards on all possible fronts. Today's article continues to compare performance with these, this time comparing the final overclocks we have achieved on both Founders Edition video cards.

Before you begin, if you aren't familiar with the GeForce GTX 1080 you can read our launch review here, and our overclocking preview here. If you aren't familiar with the GeForce GTX 1070 you can read our preview launch article here, and our full review here and our overclocking review here. We are not going to go over the specs again in this article, so read above if you want to learn more.

As a reminder, the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition is a $699 video card specific to the Founders Edition, and the GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition is $449. Since the Founders Edition video cards are the cards we are using so far and overclocking those are the price points we are going to compare with.

In our last overclocking review we found that the GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition does compete with a GeForce GTX TITAN X at default clock speeds. When overclocked it allows faster and better gameplay performance compared to a GeForce GTX TITAN X, a $1000 video card. Today we are going to expand our comparisons by now including the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition overclocked as well.

One thing you will be able to compare between the video cards is to see how close, if at all, the GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition while overclocked performs to a default clocked GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition. Then, with the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition overclocked you can see how much of an advantage that video card has over a default GTX 1080 and an overclocked GTX 1070 Founders Edition.

We are also going to throw in the GeForce GTX TITAN X again and find out how much faster an overclocked GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition performs compared to that video card. This evaluation should give you the big picture between the GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition and GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition in terms of default performance versus overclocked performance in games.
