Sounds exactly like our kind of PSU!

Introduction

XFX is a division of PINE Technology Holdings Limited (along with Samtack) which was founded in 1989 and is headquartered in Hong Kong. The XFX division is a leading AIB partner of NVIDIA based video cards and motherboards. Recently however, XFX has taken to expanding their product portfolio to include ATI based video solutions and now computer power supplies. With PINE's worldwide distribution network, XFX could be poised to become one of the next big brands in the consumer power supply market but to date they have not fully leverged this ability. Today, we are looking at a product from XFX's XTR line of power supplies the XTR 550W (P1-550B-BEFX) which is made by Seasonic.

Seasonic is one of the older companies producing consumer power supplies having been founded in 1975 and entering the PC power supply production market in 1980. During that more than 30 years as a company Seasonic has cultivated lines of power supplies that are today some of the standard bearers for efficiency and quiet computing. This focus, and their reputation for quality, has lead to a real explosion in production as Seasonic can be found providing OEM services on various model lines for Antec, Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, XFX, and of course under its own Seasonic brand.

XTRemely Good?

The XFX XTR 550W is the 10th power supply we have seen from XFX but just the first 550W unit. In fact, today's XTR 550W is the smallest capacity unit we have seen from XFX to date. Now, as it turns out, this unit comes to us at a time when we have recently had the opportunity to see a number of ~550W units of varying market segments from a number of different vendors.

As such, this market segment certainly provides the XFX XTR 550W with a bit of competition and these units give us a good idea of what the market currently looks like. Before moving on to see how this unit compares to those units, let's see what XFX has to say about this unit:

Designed for serious gamers and DIY professionals, the XFX XTR Series 550W Full Modular 80 Plus Gold power supply delivers the clean and stable power required for demanding gaming rigs and workstations. A single strong 12V rail flexibly routes the maximum available power to the parts, enabling you to maximize power usage and making setup easy. It's also been awarded the 80Plus Gold certification for its high power efficiency, and is also designed for NVIDIA SLI and AMD Crossfire multi-GPU systems, making it a perfect solution for hardcore gamers. Its modular design reduces cable clutter. And the large fan delivers silent cooling, so your computer and PSU can operate at peak performance.

Let's we move on and see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the XFX XTR 550W power supply in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality this will become clear.
