4K Overclocking Performance

On this page we will find out how much overclocking helps at 4K resolution. Since the AMD Radeon R9 390X is billed as a "Great 4K Gaming Experience" by AMD, it is important to see if overclocking helps makes games more playable at 4K given the 8GB of VRAM onboard. Perhaps overclocking pushes that VRAM harder? All of the results are apples-to-apples settings.


The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

In this graph we are running with "Ultra" preset and "High" Post-Process preset but HairWorks is turned OFF.

Overclocking the MSI R9 390X has improved performance by about 6%. It is not enough to allow us to play this game on "Ultra" settings at 4K. The overclocked GeForce GTX 980 is 14% faster than the overclocked MSI R9 390X at 4K.


Grand Theft Auto V

We are running at "Ultra" settings but we have turned the grass down to "Very High" at 4K.

The overclock has helped the MSI R9 390X by 10% in this game, a worthy improvement. It however has not helped the card actually be playable at "Ultra" settings at 4K. The overclocked GeForce GTX 980 is 16% faster than the overclocked MSI R9 390X.


Far Cry 4

We are running at "Ultra" settings at 4K in this game. The performance increase is about 6% on the MSI R9 390X with the overclock. For the first time in any game the overclocked MSI R9 390X is faster than the GTX 980 overclocked, but only by 1%. These settings are not playable.


Dying Light

In this game we are running at "Best Quality" settings which sets the shadow map size to "High" and only "Half" distance instead of full.

Again we see a 6% improvement for the MSI R9 390X. The overclocked GTX 980 is 12% faster than the overclocked MSI R9 390X. These settings are not playable.


Battlefield 4

In this game we are running at a high 4X MSAA at 4K. The overclock on the MSI R9 390X has helped performance by about 10%. The overclocked GTX 980 is about 6% faster than the overclocked MSI R9 390X. None of the cards are playable at this setting.
