Enermax Digifanless 550W Power Supply Review

Enermax joins the ranks of the fanless computer power supply builders. These are of course a must-have for those enthusiasts looking for a zero noise profile computer build. Many times these sorts of builds of course suffer from very hot environments, so fanless PSUs are a perfect fit for our testing criteria.

Introduction

Enermax Technology Corporation is a company that is well known in the world of power supplies and general computing alike. Founded in 1990, Enermax has made a name for itself by providing solid performing power supplies, among other computer components, cases, and accessories. Enermax' current lines of power supplies encompass a wide range of products targeted at various market segments including the Platimax, MaxRevo, RevolutionX't, Triathlor FC, Triathlor ECO, NAXN ADV, and NAXN series. In addition to being a retail presence with its Enermax brand power supplies, Enermax Technology Corporation used to be one of the few true OEM designers of power supplies. Its power supplies however, only rarely showed up under other labels including Grow Up Japan, Sapphire, and its house brand Lepa with that time of independent design and production seeming to have passed. Today, we are looking at the Enermax Digifanless 550W model (EDF550AWM) which comes from CWT.

Channel Well Technology (CWT) was founded and began manufacturing power supplies in 1993. Since 1993 Channel Well Technology products have shown up under various guises including Antec, Xclio, 2theMax, CWT, Enermax, Lepa, Thermaltake, Xigmatek, and Corsair. While most familiar to our US users from when it used to provide OEM services for Antec, CWT is one of the more complete OEM manufacturers as it has a fairly high level of vertical integration providing transformers all the way up to its well designed independently regulated SMPS. Recently however, CWT has begun stretching out and is providing OEM services for a number of brands as today’s unit demonstrates.

It Tames Lions! ( Is That Copy Correct? )

The Enermax Digifanless 550W is the 19th power supply we have seen from Enermax proper and, interestingly, it is the very first fanless unit we have seen from Enermax. As a whole, we have seen very few fanless power supplies over the years but, to date, these have always proven to be rather interesting products.

Given that, and the fact that Enermax products have generally been very good in our reviews, we certainly are hoping for another product today that will leave us with a real option for those users where silence is of paramount importance. Before moving on though, let's see what Enermax has to say about this unit:

The DIGIFANLESS 550W is the first digital and fanless power supply from ENERMAX. Based on a performance-capable passive cooling system, DIGIFANLESS allows for a completely silent PC operation (0db(A)). Latest ENERMAX technology and durable, high-quality components allow for a rock-stable and energy-efficient operation with 93% peak efficiency (80 PLUSآ® Platinum certified). The fanless PSU is equipped with a digital interface to read out and control the most essential power values via the brand-new ZDPMS software from ENERMAX (for example voltage, current, efficiency or temperature). Last, but not least, the new flagship power supply provides a flexible full-modular cable management with precious, individually sleeved wires.

Given that this unit is fanless, most of what Enermax has to say about this unit centers around that lack of fan and the quality necessary to achieve a reliable fanless product. Since none of that is a surprise, let's take a look at what we get when we purchase the Enermax Digifanless 550W power supply in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
