ASUS ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Platinum Video Card Review

The highest overclocked GeForce GTX 980 based video card just landed. If the ASUS ROG Poseidon GTX 980 Platinum video card with a hybrid air and liquid cooling system doesn't impress you, we are not sure what will when it comes to GPU. We push the Poseidon clocks and pit it against the AMD Radeon R9 290X for an ultimate showdown.

Overclocking the SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X R9 290X TRI-X OC

Comparison

It is as simple as this, with price drops on AMD Radeon R9 290X GPU based video cards these no longer compare to the GeForce GTX 980 by price, especially this one. However, the AMD Radeon R9 290X is still the proper "performance" comparison for the GeForce GTX 980 GPU. The AMD Radeon R9 290X is also the fastest single-GPU, and flagship, of what AMD currently has to offer up against the GeForce GTX 980 right now until AMD supersedes the R9 290X.

Therefore, for this comparison, to provide you the best comparison possible we have taken the highest overclocking AMD Radeon R9 290X GPU based video card we've ever evaluated, and compared it here. This video card was also price competitive with the ASUS Poseidon GTX 980 at its launch. We are going to use the SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X R9 290X TRI-X OC which is now about $250 less expensive than it was when it launched. However, this video card represents a highly overclocked AMD Radeon R9 290X and allows us to overclock the R9 290X to extremely high levels.

Therefore, this gives us a "best case" scenario for the AMD Radeon R9 290X GPU. We are giving the R9 290X the best chance it can get in competing with the GeForce GTX 980 using this video card. We are going to overclock the SAPPHIRE video card to the levels shown in our evaluation and let her fly.

Overclocking

To overclock the SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X R9 290X TRI-X OC we used the latest version of SAPPHIRE TRIXX software. This software allows us to utilize a higher voltage than MSI Afterburner supports. We can take the voltage to a healthy 1.391V on this video card, if we need to.

We managed to get the GPU clock speed up to 1180MHz. Remember, default stock AMD Radeon R9 290X GPU frequency is "up to" 1000MHz. That represents a large 180MHz overclock for the R9 290X, which is notorious for clock speed throttling. With the SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X R9 290X TRI-X OC we do not have this throttling as long as we keep the fan at 100% with this overclock.

This is by far the highest overclock we've had on any AMD Radeon R9 290X GPU based video card. The stock frequency of this video card is 1080MHz, which is also a high overclock as far as custom factory overclocked video cards go. We managed to increase the memory up to 5.9GHz. The default memory clock speed is 5GHz on R9 290X. We did all this with a +150 to voltage which maxed out the voltage at 1.359V.

Our final overclock we are going to use for this evaluation is 1180MHz/5.9GHz. This is literally the AMD Radeon R9 290X putting its best foot forward showing its most potential in performance comparing to the GeForce GTX 980 overclocked. The system power with this overclock was 504W.
