Cooler Master V650S 650W Power Supply Review

Cooler Master has been off the enthusiast radar in terms of computer power supplies for a while now. It simply walked a different line than much of the rest of the field. Today however we have one of Cooler Master's second foray back into the high end with a mid-level PSU rated for operation at 650 watts.

Introduction

Cooler Master Co. LTD. is a company that is well known for producing enthusiast computer cases and has been in business for almost 25 years. In addition to cases Cooler Master has product lines for CPU and GPU heatsinks, case fans, various accessories, and power supplies. Cooler Master’s entry into the power supply market has been rather mixed with some good products, and some that could use improvement. Today, we are reviewing one of Cooler Master’s middle of the road products targeted specifically at gamers with the model V650S ( RS650-AMAAG1-S1 ) which is produced in conjunction with Enhance.

Enhance Electronics Co. Ltd. was founded over 20 years ago in 1986. While a major power supply OEM Enhance is not nearly as well known to most users as some other OEMs as its core business focus has been outside of the desktop market in areas such as servers, embedded, and telecom markets. However, its products have started to surface in the US consumer realm in the last year or so under the likes of SilverStone, Silverpower, Antec, Cooler Master, and now Thermaltake as well as the occasional Enhance branded model.

Is It a Gaming PSU, or Not?

The Cooler Master V650S is one of just a handful of Cooler Master power supplies we have seen over the years. However, the last Cooler Master power supply we saw was the V850 and that was a very good unit. While that was a pleasant experience, the last 650W unit we saw from Cooler Master marketed towards gamers was worthy of a dumpster fire.

So, it seems that Cooler Master is doing a high/low mix in this segment and we are lucky enough to be seeing the higher end of the pair today.
