Far Cry 3

We are using Far Cry 3 as downloaded and played via UPlay. You can read our video card performance and image quality evaluation here to learn what all the graphics settings mean.

This game takes advantage of some performance demanding options. This game can perform alpha to coverage antialiasing on all vegetation thanks to the alpha to coverage setting. Enabling or disabling this option causes an impact on performance with AA. This game also supports all MSAA levels. Ambient occlusion is supported in SSAO or HDAO, and HDAO demands performance with SSAO costing less. We utilize all ultra settings when possible, but will customize each setting individually as needed. Our run-through consists of running through the open world in demanding areas while taking on gun fire from the enemy.

Far Cry 3 requires quite a bit of performance to achieve 2560x1600 at "Ultra" settings with high amounts of traditional MSAA. In this game all three video card were playable at "Ultra" settings. We were only able to use the lowest MSAA setting of 2X MSAA however at this resolution. Though we could technically increase the game up to 8X MSAA, the performance was not there, even on the ASUS STRIX to allow it to be playable.

The GeForce GTX 780 reference video card was just on the border of being playable. The ASUS STRIX GTX 780 OC 6GB video card was definitely faster than the standard GeForce GTX 780 once again by quite a large margin. The ASUS STRIX is dead on with the AMD Radeon R9 290X GPU based video card, which again is amazing.
